Sat. 12 pm – Der Rosenkavalier (in English: The Knight of the Rose) is a comic opera by Richard Strauss. Metropolitan Opera Matinee. WRUU – 107.5 is Savannah’s home now for this radio tradition that goes back to 1931 01/04/2020.
Rosenkavalier is a gorgeously colourful opera by Richard Strauss, written in 1911. This time he wanted to write something that would be pure pleasure.
Set in the mid-18th century the plot is a comic intrigue involving the aristocratic Marschallin, her young lover Octavian, her vulgar cousin Baron Ochs and his prospective fiancée Sophie.
In a conscious throwback to earlier operatic practice, Octavian is played by a woman.
Musically, it is full of sumptuous writing. Watch out for the glorious recurring waltz tune and the delicious Presentation of the Rose. Best of all is the ecstatic yet bittersweet trio of soaring female voices at the opera’s close.
