Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Dr. Holmes, we presume? While many people today recognize his son (Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who had things to say, among others, about theaters and fires), not many still read the works of his pa. But Holmes the elder was a prolific writer and one many Americans curled up with by the fire … or, well, at the breakfast-table. This week, Leigh Rich and P. T. Bridgeport discuss some of OWH’s stories, including “The Professor Under Chloroform,” “A Visit to the Asylum for Aged and Decayed Punsters,” and “An Aphorism and a Lecture.”
