L2L Giving Thanks (pt. I)
The giving of thanks is central to most major religions and likely all cultures. It often comprises two components: gratitude toward society and each other and gratitude for being here at all (frequently aimed at the deity/deities we recognize). There is also much self-help literature on the subject and many children’s books. Most are prescriptive — long on how to give thanks and its benefits, short on why. Thanksgiving as a holiday merges the two components, but general practices go deeper than a meal. This week, Leigh and P. T. examine some of the more general practices, as well as books, stories, and poems, that given thanks or remind each of us to in our everyday lives.
