The Nutcracker and the Mouse King
Sometimes it’s hard to follow storylines in ballet, but it’s especially hard with The Nutcracker. For the uninitiated, things seem to happen at random and without reference to what happened before. This week, P. T. and special guest host Carol Andrews, associate professor emerita of literature, trace the story of The Nutcracker from the original version by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffman, through Alexander Dumas’ revisions, to the varied dance versions that are now performed. P. T. and Carol also examine some of the more innovative interpretations and some of the rather innovative reviews of the piece.
