Les Très Riches Heures
Jean, Duc de Berry
Commissioned by Jean de France, duc de Berry, in 1411 or 1412, Les Très Riches Heures has become perhaps the best-known example of Gothic illumination and the International Gothic Style. Begun by the Limbourg Brothers, the illuminated manuscript was left unfinished after the three brothers and their esteemed patron died in 1416 (possibly of the plague). This 15th-century book of hours still fascinates people today, both the art and the calligraphy … and the many interesting stories spinning in it: the duke himself, the Limbourg brothers and their artistry, and Jean Colombe, who finished it near the end of the century. Join Leigh and P. T. as they discuss the history and beauty of this collection of prayers.
