Are Women People?
Alice Duer Miller
August 18 is the centennial of the ratification (and August 26 the certification) of the 19th Amendment, and earlier this week, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden named California Sen. Kamala Harris as his veep running mate. But long before, poet, novelist, and screenwriter Alice Duer Miller was shaping the political debate in the United States. Her satire in Are Women People? A Book of Rhymes for Suffrage Times still rings (uncomfortably) true even a hundred-plus years later. Why haven’t we learned the lessons Miller humorously taught (even if they sometimes still smart)? And will 2021 will bring that long overdue sea change for women and the United States? Dr. Carol Andrews, associate professor emerita of literature, joins Leigh and P. T. to discuss.
