“Why I Live at the P.O.”
Eudora Welty
Eudora Welty wrote incisively for decades, from her first short story in 1936 through her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel in 1972 to her last publication in 2002. Her sense of place — the South — is a most important element in her works, but her stories are about human relationships and communications … or lack thereof. Her story “Why I Live at the P.O.” is a prime example. This week, Leigh Rich, P. T. Bridgeport, and Dr. Carol Andrews discuss the story and Welty’s position in American literature and explore why anyone would live at the post office.
