Challah, Halacha, and Humor
A conversation with Rabbi Robert Haas
Established in 1733, Savannah’s Mickve Israel is the third oldest Jewish congregation in the United States. Under the guidance of Rabbi Robert Haas, it holds fast its founding history and local flavor — with communitywide events like the annual Shalom Y’all Jewish Food Festival — while building connections with Jews and those of other faiths outside city limits and even far beyond. This week, Rabbi Haas — a former schoolteacher from McAllen, Texas, and current standup comedian who applies humor to healing and halachic questions — joins Leigh to discuss Jewish life and values during the COVID-19 pandemic, religious tolerance and anti-Semitism, and Mickve Israel’s past, present, and future.
