Patching Up Our Public Health
A conversation with Dr. David Lake
Two years ago — on January 20, 2020 — the United States confirmed its first case of COVID-19. And though the pandemic is not yet over, we have begun to take stock of our response. What grade have we earned, in a high-income country and highly profitable health care system, through multiple variants (some more virulent than others), mask mandates and stay-at-home orders, and biotech feats like vaccines and antiretrovirals? The United States is unique in how it cleaves health care from public health, and many scholars fear that “the nation’s public health system remains fractured.” This week, Dr. David Lake, retired professor and departmental chair of physical therapy, turns the tables in a COVID anniversary “Freaky Friday” and poses questions for Leigh about the lessons we have — and have not — learned.
