Bitter Lemons
Lawrence Durrell
The opening chapter of any book often determines whether a reader continues. Some books do it with plot and some with style, but books only rarely start with both. One of the exceptions is Bitter Lemons, Lawrence Durrell’s account of his time in the violence of Cyprus at independence. Durrell was a noted novelist and poet whose heart belonged to the Mediterranean. This week, Leigh, P. T., and Dr. C discuss Durrell’s first chapter — and his first look at what would become one of his island “homes.”
