Welcome to “well, That’s Show Biz!”. I am your host, Jeremy Freedman, and every week I bring you music from Broadway, Movies, and Entertainers along with some anecdotes, information, and commentary all based on a theme.
-
I asked fans to send me their lists of favorite musicals and I would create a show tailored around their lists. This is the 5th of those shows which I call Fan Favorites. This fan’s list of musicals contains some interesting choices.
-
The first musical on her list is one of the most popular and considered one of the best musicals of all time. It deals with the power of the people coming together to fight for a common cause and is a celebration of freedom and democracy. It uses rap, jazz, and modern musical influences as well as non-traditional casting to tell the story of one of our founding fathers who himself was an immigrant. From Fan Favorite musical, Hamilton, we are going to hear the songs, “The Schuyler Sisters” and the “Dear Theodosia”.

The next musical on her list is advertised as “The world’s most popular musical” and it is hard to argue with that. It opened in London in 1985 making it presently the longest running musical in the West End. The musical was originally released as a French-language concept album in 1980. Created by composer Claude-Michel Schonberg and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer and based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel, Les Miserables ran for 6,680 performances on Broadway making it, at the time, the second-longest-running musical in Broadway history. From Fan Favorite musical, Les Miserables here are the songs “At the End of the Day” and “On My Own”.

The next show on this fan’s list is a show based on a 1973 French play which tells the story of a gay couple, one who manages a nightclub and the other who is the star attraction at the club. With music by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, La Cage Aux Folles ran for 1,761 performances on Broadway and produced the gay anthem, “I Am What I Am” which closed the first act. We are going to hear the title song as well as the song “A Little More Mascara”. Here’s Fan Favorite, La Cage Aux Folles.

The next show on her list is an interesting choice. This show was the first Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical to be performed publicly as a 15-minute pop Cantata in 1968. After the success of Jesus Christ Superstar, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was turned into a stage production. From the Canadian cast recording starring Donny Osmond, here are the songs “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door”.

The next musical on her list is another interesting choice. This charming musical first ran on Broadway in 1983 and tells the story of three different couples each expecting a child. From the musical Baby, here are the songs “Fatherhood Blues” and “I Chose Right”.
