Beyond the Liner

Fri. 11 am ET-Soul music is the basis for so much of America’s tastes, but all by itself, it’s contributed sweet love songs, movie themes, dance music, topical anthems, and almost every other category of American music. This week, Brian and P.T. poke around the soul catalog, from Motown, Quincy Jones, and Luther Vandross to lesser known acts like Chuck Brown and his Soul Searchers. Join Brian and P.T. this Friday at 11 am, for a little Soul-itude.05/31/2019

Fri. 11 am ET-Ed Eckstrand 8:45 AM (14 hours ago) to me, WRUU cid:image001.jpg@01D50AFA.56953B20 This is the day before the full moon (but we don’t know if it will be blue). Anything might happen on full moon nights – nurses will tell you that it’s the busiest night in the emergency room. If you have neighbors with the inclination, they may get extremely hairy and develop an attitude, like Lon Chaney in the werewolf movie. Physicists tell us that the light of the full moon has a plasma halo which may cause all sorts of things. Many songwriters connect it with romance. This week, Brian and PT play songs about the moon, trying cover as many of the moon’s moods as possible. Join us for an exploration of the moon in many times and places. 05/17/2019

Fri. 11 am ET-Ever since there’s been music, drums have kept the time; but in so many cases, they’ve become a big part of the music or the only music. From Toto’s nod in their song “Africa” to the drum-heavy artistry in Japanese taiku groups, drums are a fundamental part of everyone’s music. This week, Brian Renner and P.T. Bridgeport present a range of percussion pros, from international playing to favorite US drummers. Join us this Friday at 11 am for drumming at it’s finest. 05/10/2019

This week Brian Renner and P.T. Bridgeport play some songs that tell a story – tall tales, winsome laments, and odd little moments that define us as human beings. Music from Louis Jordan, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and yes, Harry Chapin, among others. Our guest playlist executive this week was Catherine Renner, who came up with a really interesting set. Fri. 11 am ET-The sun slides below on the horizon, on its way to light the Himalayas and the Yangtze River basin. The stars appear in the dimming light, and then the moon. Day is done, but the dimness and the advancing night have charms of their own. You might even say that “heavenly shades of night are falling…” This week, Brian and P.T. examine day end activities, from romance and evening pirouettes in the sand to spooky tales and taverns with neon signs. Fri. 11 am ET-This week, Brian and P.T. Play car songs – songs about cars or driving or the whole automotive experience. The surf sound produced many of them, but other musicians have used cars and driving as a subject. On April 12, 1966, Jan Berry crashed his car into a parked truck on a side street.  He was…….. Fri. 11am ET-Quick! Name a song that begins with the letter Z! Okay, how about a group? A composer? A show with music? It’s not so easy, but Brian Renner has put together a playlist that has those characteristics. He consulted with P.T. Bridgeport, Savannah’s leading collector of useless information, and they’ve got songs that revolve around the letter Z. Rock? Sure. Movie music? Lots of it. World music? Yep. Join Brian Renner as he wanders through the end of the alphabet, this coming Friday at 11:00 am.
