Listening to Literature

Fri. 12:06 ET-Today we recognize “celebrity” and “actor” as two separate vocations – many instantly recognizable celebrities have few acting credits. Marilyn Monroe was both, and may be the most successful ever at doing both at once. This week, Leigh Rich and P. T. Bridgeport chat with Amanda Konkle, author of Some Kind Of Mirror: Creating Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn was a deft actress, both on the set and especially, in the role of a celebrity. Yet because of her celebrity role, many downplay her skills as a cinema actress. How good was she really? Dr. Konkle will cover those subjects and more. Join us. 05/03/2019

Fri. 12:06 pm ET-…this is an ill-conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies.” In 2016, the Nobel committee awarded the prize for literature to Bob Dylan. Not everyone applauded the award. Many of the disenchanted were themselves writers. Where does poetry end and lyrics begin? Is it merely the presence or absence of music? This week, Leigh Rich and P.T. Bridgeport will discuss the difference, with the help of resident musicologist Brian Renner. The 1960’s and 70’s saw the rise of rich, poignant lyrics from a host of sources – Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and John Lennon, among many others. At the same time, poetry seemed to lose its way. Do the major poets of that era really include musicians? The Nobel Committee seems to think so. Brian, Leigh, and P.T. will try to work it on out. Fri. 12:06 pm ET-People are terrestrial creatures, but human life only started to reach its potential when it ventured out on the ocean – for food, trade, or simply adventure. The sea seems to bring out the best in humanity – and the worst. Many sea stories are well known – Moby Dick, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Kon-Tiki, Captains Courageous, Mutiny On The Bounty, The Old Man and the Sea… This week, Leigh and P. T. survey their favorite stories about living in and around the salt water. 04/12/2019
