Deep Speaks – Spring, 2017-Special Presentations

Mark your calendars and let family and friends with middle school children know about this important project that rewards creative writing in our community!

WRUU is proud to present two special programs coming up in July and August.  In July on Wednesday July 12th from 7-9 pm in the slot normally for my Evening Eclectic show we are having a special presentation of “Deep Speaks – Spring, 2017.   In both Spring and Fall the Deep Center celebrates the writing of its “Young Author Project” participants at the historic Savannah Theater in Chippewa Square.  The Spring presentation was on May 15th.

The Young Author Project, Deep’s introductory program, engages public middle school students with language and their stories to help them express themselves with skill, confidence, and courage. This after-school program is exclusively for middle grades public school students, with a typical workshop size of 14 youth. Each student is selected for a full Young Author Scholarship by a teacher at their school based on demonstrated need, enthusiasm, and dedication. The Deep Center’s award-winning program provides a challenging and fun approach to creative writing.

Selected young authors are chosen by their peers to read their published works at Deep Speaks, the Youth Author Project’s end-of-semester book launch and live reading before family members, peers, and community members. That is what everyone will be hearing on this show.

On Wednesday August 2 again from 7-9pm there will be two programs. First an encore presentation of the Deep Speaks from Fall, 2016 from 7-8 pm. The event was February 13th and we originally broadcast this our first week on the air.

This is followed from 8-9pm by: WRUU presents three stories by local author Roberta Hopkins (and member of the UUC), read by the author.   Hopkins describes herself as “Savannah’s least successful and most egregious scribblist. “ This presentation follows her reading this past January at the Starlandia Space Station.
