Nikolai Gogol was born in the Ukraine and had early success bringing stories of the Ukraine to the Russian public.  But his later works satirized the Russian bureaucracy using fantastic plots and characters.  The Nose is the story of a nose that became successful, all by itself.  Leigh Rich, P.
