This week on Contemporary Classics I am continuing the theme of water – particularly as applied to the Ocean. The show is centered on John Luther Adams “Become Ocean” which is a plea to consider climate change and the effects it has on ocean levels. In the words of John Luther Adams “Life on earth first emerged from the sea. Today the polar ice melts and sea levels rises, we humans must face the prospect of that we may once again quite literally become ocean”. “Become Ocean” will be accompanied by the haunting “Oceana” by Osvaldo Golijov, based upon the poetry of Pablo Neruda; the symphony entitled “The Sea Storm” by Rued Langgaard, a little known Danish composer; Oceanides by Finland composer Jean Sibelius and closing with “Sea Pieces” by American composer “Richard Faith”. .
